Du 3 au 26 mars la Galerie Azzedine Alaïa accueillera une présentation de planches du Codex Seraphinianus, en dialogue avec la Maison.
Cette présentation sera le premier dialogue jamais organisé avec cet ouvrage légendaire, qui, depuis sa publication en 1981, n’a cessé d’engendrer fascination et admiration. Son auteur, Luigi Serafini (né en 1949), y présentait l’encyclopédie d’un monde inconnu, dans une langue inconnue, intégrant tous les aspects d’une civilisation encore à naître. Le livre fut immédiatement salué par les grandes figures de l’époque, d’Italo Calvino et Umberto Eco à Federico Fellini.
Depuis, de nombreux chercheurs ont entrepris de trouver le code du Codex, sans succès jusqu’à ce jour. La réédition de l’ouvrage par Rizzoli en 2006 a été diffusée dans des dizaines de pays du monde, et vendus à des dizaines de milliers d’exemplaires, inspirant de nombreux artistes, de la Californie du Sud au Canada et à la Chine.
Dans le Codex originel, dix planches étaient consacrées à la mode. Depuis sa rencontre avec Azzedine Alaïa, à Rome où il vit, à l’ouverture de l’exposition consacrée au couturier par la Galleria Borghese, Luigi Serafini a réfléchi à une conversation entre son monde et cette œuvre dans le vêtement. C’est cette conversation qui est ici rendue visible.
On y trouve ainsi des planches évoquant la rencontre entre Luigi Serafini et Azzedine Alaïa, une évocation inédite de la genèse romaine du Codex, une brève histoire de la mode potentielle, des planches de mode extraites du Codex, leur continuation, et jusqu’à des images inspirées de son propre univers, que Luigi Serafini s’approprie.
Cette rencontre entre deux univers en expansion met en évidence combien la mode touche à l’existence humaine, au travers de l’histoire et de la géographie.
A l’occasion de ce dialogue sera publiée une édition spéciale de deux cents exemplaires signés par Luigi Serafini, incluant les planches, et des essais de Pascal Bonafoux, Anna Coliva, Emanuele Coccia, Donatien Grau, Jarrett Gregory, Bill Sherman, tous traduits dans l’alphabet de Luigi Serafini, faisant de cet ouvrage une Pierre de Rosette du séraphinien.

From March 3rd to 26th Galerie Azzedine Alaïa will host a presentation of plates from the Codex Seraphinianus, in dialogue with the Maison.

This presentation will be the first dialogue ever organized with this legendary book, which, since its publication in 1981, has ceaselessly sparkled fascination and admiration. Its author, Luigi Serafini (born in 1949), featured the encyclopedia of an unknown world, in an unknown language, integrating all aspects of a civilization still to be born. It was immediately praised by the great figures of the time, from Italo Calvino and Umberto Eco to Federico Fellini.
Since then, many researches have been undertaken to crack the Codex’s code, to this day unsuccessfully. The reprint of the book by Rizzoli in 2006 was spread in dozens of countries around the world and sold in dozens of thousands of copies, inspiring many artists, from Southern California to Canada and China.
In the original Codex, ten plates were devoted to fashion. Since he met Azzedine Alaïa, in his hometown, Rome, at the opening of the exhibition devoted to the couturier by Galleria Borghese, Luigi Serafini has reflected on a conversation between his world and this body of work in clothing. This conversation is made visible in this presentation.
Here will be found plates evoking the encounter between Luigi Serafini and Azzedine Alaïa, a new presentation of the Roman genesis of the Codex, a brief history of potential fashion, fashion plates extracted from the Codex, their continuation, and even images inspired by Luigi Serafini’s own universe, and appropriated by himself.
This encounter between two ever-expanding universes highlights how much fashion touches on human life, throughout history and geography.

On the occasion of this dialogue will be published a special edition of two hundred copies, signed by Luigi Serafini, including plates and essays by Pascal Bonafoux, Anna Coliva, Emanuele Coccia, Donatien Grau, Jarrett Gregory, Bill Sherman, all translated into Luigi Serafini’s alphabet, making this book a Rosetta Stone of Seraphinian.
