Message au peuple de Misrata

J’ai rencontré, à la demande de mon ami Bernard-Henri Lévy, Monsieur Souleiman Fortia, qui vous représente au sein du Conseil National de Transition des Libyens démocrates. Il m’a fait comprendre, ce que je savais déjà, combien la population de Misrata a souffert dans sa résistance aux forces de Kadhafi au cours des 3 derniers mois. Sachez que le peuple de Paris, respecte et admire votre courage et votre engagement.

Dès que cela sera possible la ville de Paris sera prête à vous apporter son soutien en gage de solidarité : d’abord pour résoudre les questions humanitaires, urgentes après un si long siège, mais aussi lorsqu’il s’agira, dans un avenir que je souhaite proche, d’entamer la reconstruction de Misrata et des autres villes libyennes.

D’une manière plus large, Monsieur Souleiman Fortia a exprimé le souhait du peuple libyen de se rapprocher de la communauté francophone. Le moment venu dès que la paix sera instaurée en Lybie l’Association Internationale des Maires Francophones que je préside proposera, selon nos règles, à des villes libyennes de nous rejoindre pour coopérer, partager et échanger nos expériences de gestion locale fondées sur les valeurs de la démocratie et de la décentralisation.

Je souhaite, bien sûr, que l’engagement du CNT et du peuple libyen à travers son combat contre le dictateur, aboutisse le plus vite possible à la construction de la démocratie en Lybie.

Croyez, peuple de Misrata, dans mon respect sincère et ma profonde admiration.

Message to the citizens of Misrata

At the request of my friend Bernard-Henri Lévy, I recently met with Mr Souleiman Fortia, your representative on the Libyan National Transition Council. Mr Fortia underlined what I already knew of your situation, namely the extent of the suffering of the inhabitants of Misrata during the last three months of resistance against the forces of Gaddafi. Allow me to share with you the respect and admiration of the citizens of Paris for your courage and determination.

As soon as it is possible, the City of Paris is ready to provide its support in the form of solidarity: firstly in resolving the humanitarian questions which are urgent after such a long siege, but also in the process of reconstructing Misrata and other Libyan cities which I hope will be possible in the near future.

Speaking more generally, Mr Fortia also expressed the interest of the Libyan people to strengthen ties with the francophone community. When the time is right and peace has returned to Libya, the International Association of Francophone Mayors which I preside will invite Libyan cities to join our organisation in order to cooperate, share and exchange our experiences in local management founded on our values of democracy and decentralisation.

Evidently, I hope that the commitment of the NTC and the Libyan people demonstrated in the uprising against their dictator leads as quickly as possible to the creation of a democracy in Libya.

Citizens of Misrata, allow me to conclude by reiterating my sincere respect and profound admiration.
