It is not so much\u00a0an occupational hazard as an\u00a0occupational disease, and\u00a0should be recognized as such\u00a0and treated kindly. We do our best.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday night at the\u00a0La\u00a0 Mama Annex on East Fourth Street,\u00a0the Nelly Vivas Company\u00a0gave the Arrabal play\u00a0its New York premiere, and\u00a0<strong>I was overwhelmed. It was a\u00a0<\/strong><strong>great theatrical experience.\u00a0<\/strong>A play about relationships that\u00a0genuinely related.\u00a0Now the simple explanation in such circumstances is\u00a0to say that the second staging was so much better.\u00a0But I suspect it wasn&rsquo;t. The National Theater production\u00a0was staged by the brilliant\u00a0South American director Victor Garc\u00eda\u00a0and it starred Jim Dale.\u00a0and Anthony Hopkins.\u00a0No carc had been spared.\u00a0But for me it didn&rsquo;t really work \u00a0&#8211; I\u00a0was interested but totally puzzled.\u00a0Now at La MamaTom O &lsquo;Horgan has staged it &#8211; it is\u00a0the <strong>best thing he has done in years<\/strong> &#8211; in a very different\u00a0fashion, and I found it most\u00a0beautiful and interesting.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<p>The play is concerned with\u00a0two people living together,\u00a0and the games they play, the\u00a0roles they assume the gestures they make.\u00a0It has the fantasy of the poetically sane.\u00a0There are two people:\u00a0One is the Architect and the other is\u00a0the Emperor -it might be thought that they\u00a0symbolize special aspects of life.\u00a0But that would not be quite true.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Arrabal is more subtle than that.\u00a0Indeed, just as all\u00a0dreams and all fantasies that\u00a0one has emerge from the single psyche,\u00a0so indeed both of these men, arguing, accusing,\u00a0condemning, fighting, loving\u00a0and losing, could indeed be\u00a0a representation of one person.\u00a0On one all ton human soul in conflict.\u00a0But probably not. There does seem to be\u00a0an dialogue here, and a dialogue\u00a0not between the contradictory forces of human nature,\u00a0but a dialogue between two people missing out in love.\u00a0They embrace, they devour, they die.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<p>It is the texture of the play\u00a0that is so fascinating and important.\u00a0It has layers to it.\u00a0At one time you think you\u00a0are seeing this, at another time you are confident you\u00a0are seeing that. If the art of\u00a0poetry is ambiguity raised to the level\u00a0the other dreams or\u00a0nightmares &#8211; and by the way,\u00a0it is &#8211; then this play is almost\u00a0impossibly poetic.\u00a0The language floats, jumps and sparkles.<\/p>\n<p>It has been translated by\u00a0Everard d&rsquo;Harnoncourt and Adele Shank,\u00a0and quite obviously they have\u00a0done a fine job. There is a\u00a0dazzling madness of words\u00a0scattered across the airy<strong> like\u00a0<\/strong><strong>diamante stars.\u00a0<\/strong>The play is a confrontation.\u00a0It takes place on an island.\u00a0Two people confined\u00a0and in conflict and in love.\u00a0The Architect and the Emperor\u00a0&#8211; the two symbols, perhaps, of the human condition\u00a0on its creative level. Or, perhaps, the way we all,\u00a0all of us, are -the titles themselves\u00a0carry their own message. But\u00a0interestingly Mr. Arrabal permits the two of them\u00a0&#8211; these two aspects of personality &#8211;\u00a0continually to switch roles.\u00a0He is saying that in all of\u00a0us there: is an Architect someone\u00a0who needs to build and control,\u00a0and an Emperor who needs to reign.\u00a0The concept is interesting, of course,\u00a0but what makes it compelling\u00a0is Mr. Arrabal\u2019s brilliant use\u00a0of it. The man dreams in the\u00a0images of reality. He reminds\u00a0me of another Spanish artist. Goya\u00a0&#8211; and the Caprichos sketches &#8211;\u00a0the \u00ab\u00a0dream,\u00a0\u00bb as Goya put it,\u00a0\u201cof reason produces monsters.\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">***<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Arrabal is severely\u00a0anticlerical -his attacks on\u00a0the church are bloody and\u00a0unbound -but he may even be severely antihuman.\u00a0One has a sense -a feel you have\u00a0for another satirist such as\u00a0Jonathan Swift- that he has\u00a0looked at us carefully , perhaps, at least hopefully,\u00a0but too carefully, and found us disappointing.<\/p>\n<p>The play does play God.\u00a0but it plays it very convincingly.\u00a0One reason of course\u00a0is Mr. O\u2018Horgan&rsquo;s elegantly\u00a0inventive production, which\u00a0stages the play with precisely\u00a0the explosive exposition that\u00a0its statement demands, and\u00a0also the acting. There are\u00a0two alternative casts. On the\u00a0night the roles were\u00a0taken with love and care by\u00a0Lazaro Perez as the Architect and Ronald Perlman as\u00a0the Emperor. They were brilliant\u00a0in an evening of dizzy revelation.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Arrabal with his perceptions, absurdities,\u00a0and understanding is\u00a0<strong>a playwright to be honored, treasured\u00a0<\/strong>and understood. In this\u00a0play he is saying something\u00a0about the isolation, the solitariness\u00a0and the need of man that, so far, as I\u00a0cat, see, no other playwright\u00a0has quite gotten on stage before.
