Ms. Emma Thompson “Withdraws” from the Petition for Polanski Launched by La Règle du jeu!

Emma Thompson, janvier 2008

When you sign a petition, you are the owner of both your name and your convictions.

Ms. Emma Thompson only drops by petitions. She is not an owner; she is only a renter. Still worse: she is there as a visitor, complete with a “visitor” name tag. Ms. Emma Thompson, in signing and then in un-signing, in coming and then in leaving as fast as she arrived, has just invented petitionary tourism.

When you no longer think on Thursday what you thought on Monday, you are not thinking at all. When you put your name on something Monday, and on Thursday you remove your name from that very thing, your name is no longer worth anything, and it loses all the importance we would want to give it in playing  the diva of engagement. In life, we must choose between caprices and ideas.

We at La Règle du jeu would like to sign a petition right now against Ms. Emma Thompson ever signing another petition again, because then it wouldn’t be the signature that would be ridiculed, but the cause.

Uh, she retracted her name from ONE petition, as far as anyone knows. Do you know of any others she’s retracted from? No? Then stop with this silly phrase- coining. “Petition tourism,” please. It’s called “coming to your senses.” Perhaps your snooty jibe derives from the palpable threat that others might follow her example?

Yann Moix: Nobody who signed this farce of a petition is the owner of any kind of conviction, because I can guarantee you that NOBODY who signed it has any free thought whatsoever. Everyone saw “Polanski,” “arrested,” “Auschwitz,” “76 year-old man,” “like a common terrorist,” “world-renowned director.” No one bothered to read the victim’s testimony. Or to ponder that their beloved director raped her. Yes, Polanski RAPED her. You WILL face up to the fact. And you will also face up to the fact that Polanski was legally and rightfully apprehended as any wanted criminal would.
Oh, but this making up of ridiculous terminology is quite fun, I will admit. So how about these: “Fame-whoring sycophants” or “ideologically-desolate zombies” (all who signed the petition) or “ridiculous logic and colossal waste of time” (the petition itself)?
So by all means, make up another petition. Any idiot can do that for any idiot cause. And since we know what your “convictions” are, we will know how seriously to take it.
And do you wonder, Yann Moix, why there are now doubters retracting their names, but no one who is not defending Polanski has publicly changed their minds? Maybe you should start a petition or something about that, if it will make you keep feeling like you’re doing anything courageous and productive.

Emma Thompson clearly has no goddamn clue what she is doing. It’s joke situations like this, when people sign off on something because all of their friends are doing it but don’t give a damn about the person being persecuted or the case itself. This is a shame of epic proportions.
